The tissue culture of 68 lichens from Fildes peninsula, Antarctica was studied. In the result,22 mycobionts and phoyobionts were isolated from Genera Acarospora, Cladonia, Himantormia, Himantormia, Sphaerophorus, Sterecaulon, Usnea and Umbilicaria. This study dealed with antioxidant ability of extracts from 24 of the antarctic lichens. The antioxidant ability were detected by the linoleic acid, DPPH and reducing power systems and was compared with that of commercial antioxidant VC and BHA. The result showed that the antioxidant activity of the extracts was concentration-dependent. In the study, Usnea aurantiaco-atra apperanted the maximum inhibitory ratio of lipid peroxidantion and the maximum reducing powe, Cladonia sp. showed the maximum scavenging activity on DPPH free radica. Such species should be explored as novel sources of effective antioxidant metabolites. The result showed that usnic acid isolated from Usnea aurantiaco-atra has some antioxidant activity but rather lower than that of extract fromUsnea aurantiaco-atra.As to be antioxidant ability of methyl alcohol extract of the mycobionts was rather lower than that of the extract isolated from the lichen species.
