Gabrius (Coleoptera, family Staphylinidae, subfamily Staphylininae)is belong to Philonthina. It is the second largest genera in the Philonthina. They can live in almost every kind of habitats in the world and feed on a wide range of food. They are closely related with our mankind because of their plenty in number and multifarious in variety.Gabrius was established by Stephens in 1829, The type species is Staphylinus aterrimus GRAVENHORST (1802). By far, 346 species of the genus were studied all over the world. They are distributed in all faunas of the world. The 26 species of the Gabrius were described in China. As an important part of Chinese Gabrius fauna, this study was based on the examinations of about 160 specimen which were collected from a lot of places in Mt. Wuling, Beijing City, Mt. Changbai, Jilin Prov. Houzhenzi, Foping Coun, Zhouzhi Coun, Shaanxi Prov. Mt. Fanjing, Leishan Coun, Guizhou Prov. Mt. Gutian, Mt. longwang, Zhejing Prov. Mt. Tianzhu, Anhui Prov. Mt. emei, Labahe, Sichuang Prov. Mt. Daba, Chongqing City. Shennongjia N. R., Hubei Prov. Muotuo Coun. Xizang A.R. Menda Coun. Qihai Prov. Mt. Meihuashan, Fujian Prov. Hutiaoxia Coun. Yunnan Prov. and so on. The results of my research can be summarized as follows:1. This paper was the first systematic study on the species of Gabrius from China.2. In this paper, 19 species of Gabrius in this district were recognized, of which 13 species were diagnosed as new to science and 2 were new to China.3. All the species were described in detail and their main diagnostic characters were illustrated. The plates of each species were also provided. The historic review, collecting methods and main diagnostic characters of the genus were discussed.4. The key to the species of Gabrius from China was presented.5. A catalog of the genus Gabrius of China was given.6. A database including all the studied species of the genus Gabrius all over the world was delicately built.
