Earthquake is one of the most serious natural disaster to human being, our country is located in both Eurasian seismic belt and circum-pacific seismic belt, where earthquake disaster frequently occurs. As a matter of fact, seismic origin and earthquake prediction become hot and difficult problems due to the complexity of earthquake and impenetrability of lithosphere and low probability of seismic events.On the basis of plate tectonics and seismology, we analyze earthquake stress by taking the typical destructive earthquakes since 2008 as examples and researching of characteristics of active faults with the help of remote sensing image. The article focus on the analysis of geologic structure background, seismic origin and epicenter migration of Wenchuan M 8.0 earthquake happened on May 12, as well as analyzed and count the structure, origin and epicenter of the Iwate-Miyagi Inland Earthquake happened on July14, Panzhihua earthquake happened on Aug. 30 and Pakistan earthquake happened on Oct. 29, tries to summarize rules and analysis region that is prone to earthquakes, and do research on earthquake prediction.According to the annual displacement of Pacific Plate Eurasian Plate from Google Earth, the extrusion from the Pacific Plate to the Eurasian Plate is a major factor caused Wenchuan earthquake, while extrusion of Indian plate toward Eurasian plate is just auxiliary. To combine the data in bands 7, 4 and 1 of ETM+ images is able to provide abundant information of geological and terrestrial surface environment data. By Imagery interpretation of linearity structural, extraction of structural information and isoline map of linearity structural density, we found that the macroseismic area, where is possible of stress concentration point, is always the intersection of lineament. Then we can deduce that other lineament intersections are prone to earthquakes. Based on the crust moment law and to summarize seismic characteristics, we can find that the intersection area of faults and 'Honglie geological belt' is also stress concentration area. We should monitor areas where stress have not been released in short terms. With the help of remote sensing images, we can get information about the existence and distribution of active faults, which is helpful in seismic zone. Above all, remote sensing technology provides us new sights into earthquake prediction.KEY WORDS remote sensing image, plate tectonics, earthquake causes, earthquake prediction.
