Ray tracing is an important way of sesmic wave forward, it plays an very important role in sesmic location, geophysical tomography and sesmic migration processing. Velocity and procision of ray tracing is the key to solve actual problem. Model-building and the method of ray tracing are the two parts of ray tracing.There are two methods of building model. They are layer-model building and blocky model building. Tradional blocky model does well in describing easy geological model. It is inconvinent to discribe complex geologic models which include reverse fault,intrusive using method if adding virtual interfaces.Blocky-model building leads the future of model building.There are many methods of ray tracing, such as shooting method, bending method, wavefront method, and so on. Shooting method has become the earliest and the most important method. It is to give initial value at the shot point for ray tracing based on Fermat's principle and change the initial value by interpolation till solution meet need. Through the shooting method, the paper uses block modeling to ray tracing.The paper briefly reviews the development course of the ray tracing technique and discusses its theory foundation. We introduce the principle of the shooting method, deducing primary algorithm, programming the algorithm of using block modeling to ray tracing. The method's effectivity and feasiblity have been proved by testing with typical and complex geologic theory models.
