Membrane computing is a branch of natural computing which abstracts from the structure and the functioning of living cells. In a membrane computing system, the multiset of objects evolves according to the reaction rules associated with the membrane and applied in a maximally parallel, nondeterministic manner. Most membrane computing systems are computationally universal. Currently, this area is being heavily investigated. Spiking neural P systems were introduced with the aim of incorporating specific ideas from spiking neurons into membrane computing. They not only mimic the way that neurons communicate with each other, but also provide concepts and principles for computer science.Spiking neural P systems with astrocyte-like control is a new extended model of spiking neural P systems incorporating astrocytes and their inhibitory influence on axons between neurons. There are many issues to be considered. So it must be studied further more. Spiking neural P systems with astrocyte-like control are also computational models which embody the important features that are common to both hardware and software. In the dissertation, we apply it to digital design. It will provide the foundations for real-world situations. In this dissertation, we focus on spiking neural P systems with astrocyte-like control. The main research topics and contributions are as follows:Starting from a spiking neural P systemΠ1with astrocytes of an arbitrary degree, considering rules with delay as well as extended rules, we prove that a systemΠ2 can be constructed, with astrocytes of degree 2, such that N2 (Π1)=N2(Π2).We also investigate an application of spiking neural P systems with astrocyte-like control to mimic Boolean circuits. More precisely, using spiking neural P systems with astrocyte-like control, we can easily model Boolean gates like OR-gate, AND-gate, NAND-gate, as well as encoder.
