Magnesium is an abundant divalent cation in plant cells and plays a critical role in many physiological processes. It is the molecular structure of chlorophyll metal centers involved in the process of photosynthesis; In addition,as an enzyme cofactor, Mg2+ regulates activities of many enzymes in cells.Previously,we have described the identification of a ten-member Arabidopsis gene family encoding putative magnesium transport(MGT) proteins. One of the members,AtMGT10 complemented Yeast Mutant(alr1/alr2).Here we report that AtMGT10 also functions as an Mg-transporter that complements MM281,which lacks CorA,MgtA and MgtB genes in Salmonella typhimurium. The AtMGT10 protein has chloroplast signal peptide, suggesting that it may be localized in chloroplast.Further RNAi and transgenesis analysis,a variegation mutant was produced.Using a Yeast-two-Hybrid screening procedure,we have identified several interact moleculars that might provide a good clue to deeply understand the role of AtMGT10 in chloroplast during photosynthesis.
