The inhibitory neurons(GABAergic)in the whisker's representative areas,in the Barrel and VPM,of SD rats were used to study the topography,the organization,the postnatal development and the relationship with the cytochrome c oxidase enzyme by double immunohistochemistry and laser confocal scanning microscopy.We found in the barrel and VPM,GABAergic neurons had different topography,organization and dynamic developmental process.In the area of VPM,it can be divided into VPMdm and VPMvl.VPM was similar with the structure of snouts' whisker and had lines A-E,but did not form barrel. GABAergic neurons mainly indwelled both sides of every line rather than in the center.In the barrel cortex,there was a representation of snouts' whisker and mainly composed of barrel with abount of cells and septa with few cells.The barrel connected to the snout whisker in a one-to-one manner.Same as the snouts' whiskers,the barrel cortex can be divided into lines A-E.Every line had four barrels. GABAergic neurons mainly lying on the edger of barrel,while there were few GABAergic neurons in the center of barrel.There did not have GABAergic neurons in septa.The postnatal development can be divided into five different stages:7day,10day, 14day,20day and 35day.1 The whisker's representation began to form postnatal 7 day(PND 7).The projection of GABAergic neurons from thalamus to the barrel cortex mixed together. GABAergic neurons and cytochrome c oxidase enzyme did not appear.2 The whisker's representation completely formed PND10,GABAergic neurons had little number,the proportion of GABAergic neurons to total numbers was 0.8%.The cytochrome c oxidase enzyme existed in the GABAergic neurons.3 The number of GABAergic neurons increased distinctly PND14.The proportion of GABAergic neurons to all the cells was 3.0%.The cytochrome c oxidase enzyme existed in the GABAergic neurons.4 The proportion of GABAergic neurons decreased to 2.5%PND20.The cytochrome c oxidase enzyme existed in the GABAergic neurons.5 The number of GABAergic neurons had a process of increase PND35,The proportion of GABAergic neurons to all the cells was 5.7%.The cytochrome c oxidase enzyme existed in the GABAergic neurons.
