The mophological taxonomy of Astragalus L. was studied from Xinjiang of China based on specimen examination, field investigation and literature matericals. Species diversity which including the diversity of endemic species, life-form spectrum, and so on was analyzed. The available plants of Astragalus was analyzed simply.145 species and 2 varispecies of Astragalus L. were occurred in Xinjiang, of which 4 species was first reported in China, A. charguschaus Freyn., A. dignus Boriss., A. angustissimus Bunge, and A. rupifragiformis M. Pop., and 1 speces was newly recorded species to Xinjiang, A. heydei Baker. 3 species which were not included in Flora Reipublicae Popularis Sinicae, A. chlorodontus Bunge, A. depauperatus Ledeb. and A. kendyrlyki M. Pop., were occurred. The new records to China and the species not included in Flora Reipublicae Popularis Sinicae was described in Chinese.A.mongutensis Lipsky and A. hegingensis Y. X. Liou is treated as synonyms of A. kuschakevitschii B. Fedtsch. ex O. Fedtsch., A. lioui Tsai. et Yu a synonym of A. pavlovii B. Fedtsch. et N. Basil., A. macrotrichus Pet.–Stib. a synonym of A. monophyllus Bunge ex Maxim., A. macroceras C. A. Mey a synonym of A. macrolobus M. Bieb.,A. myriophyllus Bunge a synonym of A. pamiriensis Franch.,and A. burqinensis Podlech et L. R. Xu was treated as a new synonym of A. vulpinus Willd. The recently described A. brevivexillatus Podlech et L. R .Xu, A. eerqisiensis Z. Y. Chang, L. R. Xu et Podlech, A.huochengensis Podlech et L. R. Xu, A. kunlunensis H. Ohba, S.Akiyama et S.K.Wu, A. luculentus Podlech et L. R. Xu, A. nematodioides H. Ohba, S.Akiyama et S.K.Wu, A. neochorgosicus Podlech, A. perbrevis Podlech et L. R. Xu, A. transecticola Podlech et L. R. Xu, and A. yangchangii Podlech et L. R. Xu were noted and were described in Chinese. Moreover, the petals'characters of A. yangchangii Podlech et L. R. Xu and the legumes'characters of A. eerqisiensis, A. porphyreus, and A. sinkiangensis was included. There are 8 subgenera in Xinjiang, which has a percentage of 81.8% of total subgenera of the Old World and of 88.9% of total subgenera of China. The Subgen. Calycophysa Bunge species were known only from Xinjiang of Chinese Province and Subgen. Trimeniaeus Bunge, Subgen. Cercidothrix Bunge, and Subgen. Calycocystis Bunge was mainly distributed in Xinjiang. The xerophilous groups has the highest percentage of 63% of total species in Xinjiang. The endemic phenomenon was obvious. 34 species (23.4%) are endemic to Xinjiang and 82 subendemic species (56.6%) which only distributed in Xinjiang of Chinese Province were found. The Astragalus species had important value in grass, medical purposes, nitrogen fixation and so on.
