Taizhou is emerging as a new industrial city in Middle Jiangsu Province. Since it's been entitled as a municipality directly under the central government, its economy developed rapidly, achieving a historical leap. However, the atmospheric issue, especially the sulfur dioxide pollution, has become a great concern, calling for immediate solution. GIS has strong spatial analysis and expression ability, its application to the field of environmental research has become a new trend and shows increasingly great importance. This paper adopts GIS to the research of the temporal and spatial change law of sulfur dioxide in Taizhou and analyzes the change situation of sulfur dioxide in Taizhou based on the emissions, distribution and proliferation of sources, it includes the following sections:Systematical analysis of the geographical profile, socio-economic environment, administrative divisions and the demographic situation, energy consumption and environmental quality of the Taizhou City, which provides a foundation to the study of temporal and spatial change law of sulphur dioxide.Research of the change conditions of sulphur dioxide emission from the elevated industrial point source, the industrial area source, the living area source according to the classification of emission types of pollution sources; analysis of the change law of sulphur dioxide emission from 6 industries: thermal power, textiles, chemicals, medicine, manufacturing and other; Discussion of the change and distribution characteristics of pollution sources. These are based on the data comprehensively collected and collated from environmental statistics between 1999 and 2006, employing the methods of spatial analysis and expression in GIS.Introduction of the atmospheric dispersion model, together with the simulation of the long-term concentration of sulphur dioxide in Taizhou, according to the meteorological characteristics, the natural geographical conditions and the emission and distribution of pollution sources of Taizhou, based on the normal model prevailing in present engineering, with the Continuous Point Source Diffusion Model, the Virtual Point Method of Area Sources, Gaussian Proliferation Model of multi sources and long-term average Concentration Model, as well as visualization of the simulation results. By contrast with the monitoring data, it proved that the simulation results can better reflect the proliferation situation of sulfur dioxide, providing a reference value for the comprehensive management of sulfur dioxide pollution and environmental planning in Taizhou.
