With the development of mobile networking, positioning, communication technology, computer technology and GIS, Mobile Location Service and LBS (Location Based Service) emerge as the times require. The expansive effect of mobile handhold devices including PDA and intelligent mobile phone makes the application of the mobile map become more and more popular. But the restrictions of handheld devices and the characteristics of wireless network environment require the representation of the map adapt to the new conditions. As the important ache in the process of map production, map generalization is facing the challenge in the mobile environment.Taking the settlement as example, we first reviewed the state-of-the-art of mobile map and generalization algorithms of settlement. At present mobile map has been widely appreciated. But the study on the generalization algorithms of settlement for the representation of mobile map is still in the primary phase. In this paper we firstly concluded the characteristics of settlement in the representation of mobile map. Compared to other features settlement has larger quantity and mainly be represented in the form of right angle, so we should preserve the characteristics. All require map generalization algorithms to have the ability of real time and consider the context and the recognition of user. Based on the earlier study, we analyzed the efficiency of some algorithms of settlement and its ability to maintain the character of object. This can apply the reference for the application of generalization algorithms. In this paper we also designed the framework for map generalization in the mobile environment, realized some algorithms and tested the time they take. Considering the technique parameters, we tested the usability of them in the mobile environment. In the end we also attempted to design the algorithm on settlement which takes the distance between the object and user into account. At last we proved the usability of the algorithm based on the given case.
