The electronic total station is the integration of geodimeter,electronic theodolite and micro-processor,and it can measure, compute, display and record the surveying datas imultaneously,so it is applied broadly inengineering survey. In comparison with traditional surveying instruments,the total station have an advantage in data communication with the computer and other equipment such as elec-tronicnote book.By using the electronic total station,the efficiency of surveying work can be improved In agreat degree,mistakes of manual reading-writing reduced and the integration of inside and outside Surveying work realized. Total Station optical theodolite and share a lot in principle, but Total Station is much more complicated than the theodolite, a theodolite incomparable advantages and characteristics, the paper explains the basic principles of the Total Station, the mechanism of error, how to test. According to the experimental data and measurement of the total station shaft geometry, calculated using the least squares solutions for the unknown quantity of equipment for error evaluation and error correction.
