Research On Map Extended Symbol Under ArcEngine

Geographic Infomation System(GIS) is a software system focusing on map presentation.The map in the GIS presents geographic elements using special map symbols,thus the map symbols are the basic tool for displaying geo-elements.In practice,GIS user has a high requirement for the drawing speed and display outcome of map symbols in GIS.This paper tries to explore customizing symbols under the welcoming GIS platform ArcGIS through redevelopment。The purpose of this paper is to overcome the drawback of the symbol function for developpers in ArcEngine,and provide symbol-customizing function for ArcGIS-based embedded GIS softwares.The implementation of symbols in ArcGIS is deeply discussed here,the two kinds of symbol file formats in ArcGIS are analyzed and a symbol file format converter is given.For the purpose of producing customizing symbols rapidly and conveniently,this paper design a full-functional symbol editor and implement it successfully,and ensure the symbols produced by this symbol editor could be embeded into map program correctly.The customizing symbols are proved to be practical and useful,give the ArcGIS-based embedded GIS softwares more flexible symbol functions.The technology discussed in this paper is helpful to implement more complicated symbol functions for ArcGIS based softwares.
