Information sharing and inter-operation technology are the bottlenecks of current GIS development; in order to solve these issues, new distributed computing methods need to be developed. The emergence of SOA framework and Web service technology generate a new opportunity to the GIS development. As for the new technology, there are many researches on the related technology theories at the moment domestically. However, the application of how to provide practical and efficient geospatial information service platform based on network is still at laboratorial phase.Based on practice, this article focuses on the research of providing OGC compliance geospatial information service platform, related management system and services composition engine with mind of reducing repeated development. It anticipates providing helpful reference and experiment for the research and application in this area and also promoting other related research.With the discussion of inevitable trend of introducing web service technology to GIS and the concept of geospatial information service; characteristic of geospatial information service is summarized. It also researched on the classification of geospatial information service for the platform, and designed a base model for the realization of geospatial information service. Combined with existing GIS functional module, a geospatial information service platform structure, which is inheritable GIS functional module and fully conforms to SOA framework and OGC compliance, was designed. Using WMS as an example, a geospatial information service unit was designed, realized and deployed in the system. It illustrates the specific technique realizing the service of this fundamental functional inter-operation structure. With the analysis of the application of various services composition pattern in the area of geospatial information and the reference of workflow related model, a cross-platform VagaSCube geospatial information service composition engine is designed and realized by using the business process execution language BPEL4WS. In the design and application, a service search method based on location attribute is also introduced. A geospatial information service platform management system is designed and developed based on Struts framework. Finally, it summarizes and put forward some unsolved issues in the area of geospatial information service.
