The lightning has been a great threat to the life of the human beings for a long time. And it got different forms with the development of the society, the early stage of which was the lightning stroke. It led to great damage to the human beings, animals, the building as well as the fire of the forest, which took great negative effect on humans'life. In the information time, the great lightning electromagnetic pulse (LEMP) may lead to the ineffective operation or even the damage on various micro-electronic equipments, which is also the nuisance in the domain of aviation, the military affairs of the national defense, the computer and communication and so on.There were lots of researches on LEMP in both China and abroad mainly by observation and also some models for calculation are put forward based on the research. However, no matter what method was adopted, the research was limited to the space around the earth, attached little importance to the open space of LEMP. Therefore, the research on lightning electromagnetic fields in the open space is benefit for the prevention of disaster and the inductive lightning protection for objects in space. It also shows greater importance in the field of aviation, the military affairs of the national defense.In this thesis, based on the theory of Electromagnetic field calculating in open space, the summary of research both in China and aboard are concluded, as well as the formation and characteristics of lightening. And as at that, the several of mathematic models on lightning current are introduced, and the calculating theories of the lightning return stroke electromagnetic fields are researched. The computation theories on the LEMP waveform and its peak value are proposed as the focus, the distributive pattern of LEMP in the open space is summarized by the visualization simulation of the result. Also some primary factors that can take effects on LEMP are discussed in this thesis, and some research on the electromagnetic fields of the intracloud lightning is covered.
