Polarization Maintaining Optical Fiber (PMF) have been more and more widespread applied in optical fiber communication and optical fiber sensing system because the strong ability on polarization maintaining to the linearly polarized light and the good compatibility with the ordinary single mode potical fiber.People have done much works and made significant development on the theoretical design and the fabrication technology and the parameter survey of PMF.There is a detailed note in this article about polarization maintaining fiber characteristic parameter: The extinction ratio, the beat-length and the degree of polarization through the introduction of the principle and the type of polarization maintaining fiber. The transmission principle of light in optical fiber was described carefully by the calculations and data in this article. There is a detailed description about the development and the progress of polarization maintaining optical fiber and the measurement technique on it.I Structured an experimental test system according to the principle of polarization maintaining optical fiber and the characteristic of internal mode coupling of it for measuring the parameter:beat-length based on the press measuring method with point coupling analysis in the experiment.I have completed the optical design and the data processing of the whole test system.I could achieved the design feature of every junior system in the whole working process according to the principle of measurement. The test system was divided into two parts of the polarization adjustment and the date test according to the request of test in the article.
