Airborne Lidar (Light Detection And Ranging) is a new technology which develops very rapidly, it gathers with a lot of technologies and has become the important technical means in obtaining spatial data. Its applications are mainly in getting 3D position of the terrain very quickly, and then it can make DSM, digital maps, DOM and the building of GIS, and so on. It is the surveying system of 3D position. The systematic research and discuss is carried out about airborne Lidar and its data processing in this paper. The history and current development of airborne Lidar system is expounded, the problems and shortages are pointed out, and the works and achievements interiorly are introduced in detail. The feature of each part of airborne Lidar is analyzed, the working principle of laser scanner is studied especially, and typical systems and some widely software are introduced. The surveying principle of airborne Lidar is expounded, the coordinate systems are discussed in detail, the transforms among coordinate systems are presented, and the systematic errors are analyzed at last. The filtering methods of airborne Lidar data are studied and summarized especially; the advantages and shortages of the present means are discussed. A new filtering method is brought forward based on section data, and the arithmetic is realized with program. The experiments are put forward using airborne Lidar data; the results of experiments are analyzed. It proved that using this arithmetic the processing speed of data is faster and the filtering effect is better. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of airborne Lidar compared with photogrammetry are discussed in detail, and some applicable fields in engineering are introduced.
