Land use change mainly indicates the changes of the way of land use. Due to the difference of natural conditions, there are an evident difference of land use changes in quantity, intensity and construction etc. in different areas. Based on the land use pattern of Xinghualing district, Taiyuan city, in 1998 and 2003, aided at GIS technology and mathematic statistic and combining the geography, land science, landscape ecology and several indexes, such as patch characteristics index of landscape elements, landscape heterogeneity index, landscape pattern index, etc., the author analyzed the dynamic changes of landscape pattern and the dynamic changes of land use by dynamic indexes.Four parts were included in the thesis. Firstly, a brief introduction on the advance and results of research on LUCC and landscape ecology at home and abroad was given, and the land use patterns in our research were presented. Secondly, using the quantitative analysis method, author analyzed a number of indexes presenting the landscape pattern in different land use types. By GIS technology, a database of the land use was established and analysis of attribute data of land use for landscape pattern fractal dimension, Shannon-Winner index, etc. was carried out. Meanwhile, by the theories of landscape ecology, geography and sustainable development, the changes of land use in this distract was presented. Thirdly, using the data got from GIS analysis, dynamic constructions, such as construction characteristics, change rate, use degree in land use of the area were summarized. At the last part of thesis the countermeasures for reasonable use of the land were put forward. The results are as follows:1. Looking at the area change of land-use type, we can draw a conclusion that the cultivated land, waste land areas decreased, while traffic land, forest land, orchard land and towns areas increased. The absolute value of areas change of cultivated land was the biggest, and the forest land, towns, the traffic land, the waste land areas decreased in sequence.2. From the land use degree, we found that the level of land use efficiency was higher in this area than that of the average in the whole country, but the degree of land cultivation and forest land cover was lower than that of the average in the whole country.3. In 1998, the mean patch area of forest land was the biggest, then traffic land, the waste land, the cultivated land, orchard land, grassland, towns and water areas sequentially followed; but in 2003 the order was the forest land, traffic land, orchard land, the cultivated land, the waste land, grassland, towns, water areas. The cultivated land, orchard land, the waste land, traffic land and forest land areas decreased, but town's areas increased.4. From fractal dimension index which reflects the shape character of landscape elements pattern areas, its sequence from big to small was traffic land, towns, the waste land, orchard land, forest land, water areas, the cultivated land, and grassland in 1998. While the sequence in 2003 was traffic land, the waste land, towns, the cultivated land, orchard land, forest land, water areas, and grassland.5. The landscape patch density, borderline density, Shannon's evenness and diversity index showed a tendency of increase, but dominance index decreased.
