In the present paper, three-dimensional coupled mechanical and electrical finite element analyses have been performed to investigate the interaction between a crack and a piezoelectric particle embedded in a non-piezoelectric elastic matrix. Firstly, the influences of piezoelectric particle on the three-dimensional stress field in front of crack-tip under different mechanical and electric field loadings are studied carefully. The conclusions show that, under small electric fiels, different mechanical loadings can only influence the magnitude of crack-tip stress, but can not influence the distribution of it. On the contrary, different electric field loadings can not only change the magnitude but also change the distribution of crack-tip stress. Secondly, the influences of piezoelectric particle on the three-dimensional crack-tip stress field under different thickness of plate are analyzed. The conclusions show that the thickness of cracked plate can only influence the distribution of the stress along the thickness direction under high electric field loading. At last, three types of inclusion (NPCM, NPHM and PCM) were compared, and the influence of each type of inclusion is presented. The conclusions are valuable for the deeper research in the controlling of crack propagation in the elastic medium.
