The applicability of the S.W.Tsai-E.M.Wu strength criteria in 2-axial fiber-reinforced composites is discussed in this paper, the strength parameter F1 2 in S.W.Tsai-E.M.Wu strength criteria is obtained by mathematical method ,and it produces inconsequent result which shows the strength of this material is isotropic. It indicates that the strength parameter F1 2 should be obtained by experimental method. An experimental investigation of the biaxial tensile strength of 2-axial fiber-reinforced composites is conducted. The biaxial experimental method is discussed, a new kind of biaxial experimental assembly parts is designed and manufactured. The configuration of the cruciform specimen is determined by the finite element method. Two kinds of 2-axial fiber-reinforced composites are studied by the biaxial (stress ratio is 1∶1) tensile experiment, the biaxial strength and strength parameter F1 2 are obtained. Experimental results demonstrate that biaxial weakening exists in 2-axial fiber-reinforced composites. To solve the limitation of S.W.Tsai-E.M.Wu strength criteria in 2-axial fiber-reinforced composites, a new strength criteria is derivated by theory of representation for tensor functions. The new criteria represents the strength property of 2-axial fiber-reinforced composites comprehensively and the experimental results show that the new criteria can be used in 2-axial fiber-reinforced composites.
