According to the tapered members with I sections used very often for steel structures, the main work of this thesis is to study the displacement and stability of the tapered members. The main achievements obtained in this thesis are as follows.Firstly, this thesis presented an explicit rotation-deflection relation of tapered member based on numerical analysis. Three rotational restriction are derived and a new method is proposed for the solution to the displacement of varying acrossing-section member.Secondly, this thesis do some analysis about the stability of the web-tapered, cantilever members with I section. By using finite element method and energy method, the expression about critical load and torsion, flexural-torsional load was given. What's more, for easily used in project, the P-M relation about girder and columniation was also given in this paper. Finally, research is conducted on the in-plane elastic stability of columns composed of several prismatic or tapered members for different boundary conditions. Different simple and applicable formulae of buckling load are obtained here, to provide simple methods to check the in-plane elastic stability for engineering design and relevant rules.
