The development of urban is the focus of the relationship between human and land because urban is the densely synthesis for population, resource, environment and social economy elements. The course of industrialization grows steadily, economy develops rapidly, a large amount of population increases based on urban itself and flood into from suburban and rural, the living standard of people improves continuously, and people aspire after creature comfort and advanced spiral civilization at the same time. All of these have urged urban to expand gradually and are about to urge. With the urban expansion, various resources are expended rapidly. As a kind of fundamental and essential nature resources, land is directly affected by urban expansion, especially in the edge area of urban area, all types of lands transform into urban area in various ways as the urban expansion. To study the process of the transformation and its driving force elements, JiaDing District of Shanghai was taken as an experiment area in the case study. Four Landsat TM or ETM+ images of JiaDing District were chosen as data source for remote sensing classification to get land use information. The change and the transformation of types of land use in JiaDing District from 1989 to 2006 have quantitatively analyzed in the thesis through the statistic analysis after overlaying the images from classification for JiaDing District. Through getting the results from classification and NDBI(Normalized Difference Barren Index) together, the map plots of urban land use of JiaDing District hare been distilled, and then their acreage were analyzed and the changes in quantity of urban expansion and the pattern of the changes in spatial distribution in the year intervals from 1989 to 1995,from 1995 to 2001 and from 2001 to 2006 were also known under the statistic analysis in this thesis. The main driving forces causing urban expansion in JiaDing District from 1989 to 2006 were finally analyzed with the data about...
