Investigations on the coupling of electromagnetism-solid have important applications in many fields, such as energy sources, traffic and national defence. It has formed a rising research field involving electromagnetism physics and solid mechanics. The experimental and theoretic studies on the magnetoelastic buckling of cantilevered ferromagnetic plates in transverse magnetic field are reported in this paper. The main results are summarized in the following several aspects:(1) Experiments on the magnetoelastic buckling of cantilevered ferromagnetic plates made of A3 soft steel in transverse magnetic field with different length ,width and thickness by electromagnetic iron were completed. During the course of the change of magnetic field, the deflections of the free ends of the thin plates were measured. The results of the experiments indicate that: the critical magnetic inductions of magnetoelastic buckling of cantilevered ferromagnetic plate are pertinent to the length, width and thickness of the plate. The critical magnetic inductions will increase as the width or thickness is augmented and will decrease as the length is diminished.(2) The microcosmic physical principia of the magnetoelastic buckling of the ferromagnetic plates are discussed and explained.
