Superluminescent diodes(SLD) are required as light sources for many applications including fiber optical gyroscopes (FOG), and for wavelength division multiplexing(WDM)optical fiber communication and testing systems, and also for optical time domain reflectometers(OTDR). Many scientific institutes and colleges have paid much attention on researching and improving device performance. People have got same devices with high performance, through designing SLD structure or changing materials or evaporating film on facets, sometimes take several methods of them. In this thesis, the fundamental concepts behind the operation of SLD and all kinds of methods were utilized on improving SLD's performance will be reviewed in chapter2. According to electron-photon transition, characteristic of SLD's output spectrum will be discussed in detailed in chapter3, the SLD discussed including bulk material active layer and single quantum well active layer, compare calculated results with experimental results and analysis the differences. In chapter 4,crystal growth by MBE(Molecular Beam Epitaxy) and fabrication of device will be introduced. Finally, a summary and a description of future possible work will be presented in Chapter5.
