In this thesis, we have applied the MDF impulse to simulating powerful X-ray radiation and pulsed laser blow-off impulse. We have studied the structural response of cylindrical shells under the impulse distributing around the shell in a nearly cosine manner. We also have done some exploratory experiment to study the techniques for surface protection.Systematically, we have studied the structural response of LY12 Al cylindrical shells, which are different in the ratio of thickness to radius, under different magnitude of MDF impulse distributing around the shell in a nearly cosine manner. Circumferential strain and permanent deformation are recorded, which are close to the experimental results reported by Lindberg. By using Ansys/Ls-dyna, we have studied the structural response of cylindrical shells and the results are close to the experimental results. Primary experimental results indicate that by laying some tiny glass beads on the loaded surface, the damage due to lead particles can be weakened.
