ObjectiveNMDA receptors are consisted of NR1 and various NR2 subunits. In adult forebrain regions, such as the hippocampus and cortex, NR2A and NR2B subunits are involved in the formation of the receptor complex with NR1 subunit. The recombinant NR1 -NR2B complex shows longer excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) than does the NRI - NR2A complex. NR2B expression is downregulated during the transition from juvenile to adult, correlating with the gradual shortening of the EPSP duration of the NMDA channel. Accumulating evidence indicates that, NR2B is crucial for synaptic plasticity, learning and memory and nervous system degenerative diseases.
