Economy and society developed rapidly in studying region, simultaneously the vegetation pattern in Mu Us desert had changed greatly during 14 years. In this paper, combining with field investigation and measurement, "3S"techonology was used to analyze the characteristics of vegetation pattern changes. Integrating evapotranspiration of the main community types in July and August, we also analyzed the water deficit of each vegetation type of this region in light of water ecological character, primarily explained relationship between vegetation pattern and ecological process, which provides some scientific references for future vegetation construction. The main results are as follows:1. Vegetation in studying area was divided into 10 types according to field investigation and interpretation with remote sensing technology. And the pioneering plant community in moving dunes and Artemisia ordosica community in fixed sandy land were dominant communities, which occupied 32.77% and 27.14% respectively of total area. Landscape pattern indices showed that moving dune was disturbed strongly and fixed sandy land was of more expansionary property.2. The vegetation really changed a lot during 14 years. Comparing the area between 1988 and 2002, the area percentage of pioneering plant community in moving dune was reduced by 9.47%, but that of Artemisia ordosica community in fixed sandy land increased by 6.12% and the percentage of Form. Caragana microphylla and cropland increased by 3.7% and 1.16% respectively. When it comes to changes at landscape scale, the vegetation tended to be fragmental and diversified and all vegetation types showed the traits of equilibrious development, and the control of pioneering plant community in moving dunes to the whole vegetation decreased noticeably. We could conclude that the original landscape pattern dominated by pioneering plants in moving dunes would not exist soon following this change mode. By analyzing the reasons of vegetation pattern changes in this...
