Based on the observation data of suspended sediment concentration (SSC)collected in 22 cruises with 3729 cases in the Yellow and East China Seas from 1959to 2002, this paper statistically analyzed the features of vertical distribution of SSC inthe sea water, and established some linear regression models of vertical distribution ofSSC adapting to certain sea area and certain season on the basis of correlation analysis. The conclusions are as following. The vertical SSC has a clear seasonal variability ashigher in winter and spring but rather lower in summer and autumn. The relativewater depth is the main factor which closely affects the magnitude of SSC, however, the water depth corresponds with the grads of SSC which presents bigger in theYangtze River estuary and Hangzhou Bay, moderate in zones parallel to the coastfrom the Northern Jiangsu to Fujian province, smaller in other off-shore area. As thesurface SSC is known, the SSC at different depth layer can be calculated by usingregression models. The validation tests of these models show high confidence scoreand the estimated values of SSC indicated that these models are more reliable andaccurate when predicting the SSC in the upper and intermediate layers. The characteristics of suspended silty fine sand under different wave action areconducted based on a flume experiment. The conclusions show that sedimentconcentrations are consistent with wave height and period, which appears three-layerturbid structure in the water. Both the wave-respond property of SSC and thefluctuation behavior of particle are evident and complicated in a certain water layernear the bed, while they are quite weak in the upper layer beyond the bed. The settlingpattern of sediment in the static water after wave action is controlled by the ratio ofwave elements between period and height.
