In recent years, comprehensive attention has been paid to a new kind of stationary phase-monolithic columns, which are considered as the fourth generation chromato-graphy sorbents. A mixture consisting of the monomers, cross-linker and initiator in the presence of at least one, usually two porogenic solvents, initiated by light or heat, can make out a monolithic column. It has many advantages ,for example, simple preparation, unique properties, excellent performance and no frit. Perhaps an even more important advantage of this column is the ability to maintain relatively high column efficiency at high mobile phase flow rates. So, the monolithic columns are convenient for ultra-fast chromatography. In this thesis, the types of monolithic columns, preparations of them and their applications are reviewed. Strong cation-exchange capillary monolithic columns (0.32mm-i.d. 100mm in length) were produced by radical polymerization of glycidyl (GMA) and ethylene dimethacrylate, then sulfonated by 1M Na2SO3. The monolithic columns were used for the determination of cations in several water samples by ion chromatography. In this method, recoveries of 98.2%-103.0% and RSD's of 0.4%-1.0% were obtained. These columns have attractive features such as low sample and reagent consumptions, simple construction and low cost.Capillary liquid chromatography uses 0.05-0.5mm I.D. columns. Compared to common inner diameters(i.e. 3.2-4.6mm), it brings some benefits to the separation process, e.g. decreased amounts of eiuents, stationary phase and samples, and it can be connected to mass spectrum directly. So it developed rapidly in life sciences and environmental sciences. Because of its small column volume, dead volume affects greatly on column efficiency. The design of the join apparatus is very important, because it can lead to samples diffusion and poor efficiency. In order to sever thisproblem, we developed a new kind of capillary column and it has good performance. The mineral elements go together with the underground gas and water. Because of obstruct of the earth surface or concentration effect, these elements can be left in the earth surface. Investigating these migratory elements helps to find out delitescent mines. I Investigated some anions in earth surface (different depth)in Tiaozishan and Xiaoxigong Jiuquan Gansu, using ion chromatography. With the quantity of cation, deposit sequence and its geochemical significance can be found out.
