The 21st century is the ocean's century. There are series of difficult problems such as population expansion, resource insufficiency and environment deterioration, etc. Mastering the rule of ocean motion, investigating the ocean resources and promoting scientific exploitation and utilization provides reliable and important way to resolve these problems effectively, and has become the urgent mission of current high-tech development. For a large amount of ocean data, it is a traditional way to make use of database for management, and apply other analysis software to realize some common functions. It can hardly accomplish comprehensive analysis and appliance for dynamic ocean environment related to time and space. However, GIS can provide powerful functions in data processing, data analysis and data visualized comprehensive management, and has been successfully applied in many fields (such as traffic management, urban planning, etc). Introducing GIS technology and methods into ocean fields can also achieve the goal of comprehensive management for ocean monitoring fruits. Based on the work in developing the Xiamen Atmospheric and Oceanographic Data Management and Display System (AODMDS), this dissertation has discussed the visual expression of atmospheric and oceanography data using AO components & VB (VC), and has obtained following results:1, According to the complexity of ocean data and expression habits, a set of applicable mode for expressing atmospheric and oceanographic data is formed.2, Based on the mapping function of ArcGIS, the effective methods of visual mapping realization towards atmospheric and oceanographic data are discussed.3, According to the unpublished techniques in AO, how to create a Gradient-fillstyle colorramp control is studied. This control provides a feasible rich-color display for all kinds of raster maps.4, According to the particularity of atmospheric and oceanographic data, an annotation-editing method is discussed. The results of this dissertation are not only applicable to this information system, but also useful for other homothetic visual systems.
