Gully is one of the basic landform configuration in loess plateau. Because gully erosion is the most important type of soil erosion in this area, the study on the characteristics of the gully and their spatial variance is an important content studied in loess plateau. This research was on the basis of summarizing formers' research results and research experience extensively. 1:10,000, 1:50,000 scaled DEMs were taken as basic data source, to extract the characteristic information of the gully based on fluvial simulation method and window analytical methods of grid DEMs. It utilized such theories and technological methods as spatial analyst of GIS, quantitive modeling of surface process to discuss the theory and method of extraction hydrological feature from DEMs, and try to probe into the characteristics of gully's spatial variance and its inherent mechanism, external terms. First of all, constructed the extraction model of the characteristic information of gully based on raster DEMs; Secondly, illustrated the spatial variance features of gully of loess plateau in North Shaanxi with typical datum and geostatistical analyst; Finally, the cause of formation of gully's spatial invariance was interpreted from such seven respects as the forming and evolution of loess landform, soil granularity, geomorphologic type, erosion type and degree, spatial variance o f rainfall and erosivity factor of rainfall, vegetation type and its coverage, man-made factors and so on.
