Groundwater monitoring is a foundational work of the national economy, and one of the important items of groundwater monitoring is groundwater level monitoring. As the result of the realization of the automatic groundwater monitoring system, the groundwater information will be available to water departments accurately and in time, and the work of the groundwater information prediction will be promoted. Accordingly, it will make for directing reasonable development and sustainable utilization of groundwater resources. At present, the GSM network is a maturer digital mobile communication network, and it has almost extended all over the country. Data telecommunication via Short Message Service (SMS) of the GSM network is of some characters such as simple realization, dependable data transmission, without the limitations of terrain and environment and so on. Using this technique, the groundwater level long-distance automatic monitoring system based on SMS is designed and realized in this paper.This paper puts emphasis on the design and realization of monitoring station of the groundwater level long-distance automatic monitoring system based on SMS. First, this paper presents the meaning of studying the task and the actual development state of groundwater monitoring at home and abroad. Some existing methods of data telecommunication are analysed and compared. The GSM network and SMS are described specially, and the feasibility analysis of applying the GSM network and SMS in the field of groundwater monitoringis provided. And then this paper sketches the whole design of the system, including the total framework, the operating principle and the main functions of the system. Afterwards, the hardware design and the software design of monitoring station are discussed respectively in detail, especially the realization of communication function of the system. Furthermore, the hardware and software anti-jamming techniques of the system are described severally. Then the monitoring center software is outlined. After presenting the design and construction of the system, the aspects relative to the debugging are mentioned, and some problems appearing during the debugging process are analysed and summarized. At the end of the paper, the reliability analysis of the system is performed, and the application of the system is depicted briefly. Moreover, this paper summarizes the design work and some new approaches used during the design process. Lastly, the prospect of the future development of the system is also proposed.Now the system has been in use. Through the practical application, the system is running stably and reliably, and has satisfied the prospective demands. With the aid of SMS of the GSM network, data telecommunication can be realized, which is fit for transmitting a small quantity of data such as the information of orientation, remote measurement, remote control, alarm signal, etc. Automatic monitoring system based on the technique is especially applicable when there are lots of scattered or remote monitoring stations. Therefore, this technique must be widely applied in the field of measurement and control industry.
