Within the vast area of China and its vicinity ((20°S ~ 60°N,40°E ~160°E)), there are not only Tibetan and Pamirs plateaus shaped by the collision and extrusion of India plate and Eurasia plate and a series of basin ranges in the west, but also rift basin in the east of Asia, and the most developed trench-arc-basin systems shaped by the extension in the east. The study on the 3-D velocity structure of China and its adjacent areas in this paper is of great significance for the further understanding of the deep tectonic features and the relationship between deep and shallow tectonics. The author has expatiated on the principle of body wave tomography and international and national present research situation. On the base of using part of natural earthquake travel time data of ISC reports (1964—2001) and that of earthquake stations in China (1985—1997), the author has finished P wave velocity structure high resolution tomography of mantle deep into 2871km in China and adjacent areas, and reconstructed velocity structure deep into low mantle in China and adjacent areas. The selection of data ensures the maximum limit of well-distribution of earthquakes and stations. During the ray tracing, the author has divided the task into many sub-tasks. So it ensures the high efficiency of computation and the possibility of large scale computation. The inversion process is based on the 3-D heterogeneity model. As a result, the inversion results are more precise. In addition, the author has discussed priori inversion model and inversion results in detail. Based on these researches, a series of fast, effective and easy-used Fortran source codes are written and rewritten. At the end of this paper, the author has introduced our ongoing work—fine structure inversion in local areas with finite frequency seismic tomography theory. This paper is funded by the National Science Fund Key Projects(40234047, 49734150)...
