Marine sponges are the most primitive multicellular animals, which haveproduced various bioactive secondary metabolites. It have been the single richestsource of marine natural products.A marine sponge collected from China South Sea, which was identified asCraniella australiensis (Carter). It have never been report on its natural products. The characters including spicule morphology and elemental compositions, chemical constituents and bioactivity of the marine sponge were studied.Using EDXRF, elemental compositions were studied. Compared with otherfour sponges, the spicule content is high and spicule morphology is different.Chemical constituents of Craniella australiensis (Carter) weresystematically investigated. Two compounds Phenylalanine and Adenine wereisolated from the alcohol extract by extracting, portioning, silica gelchromatography and ODS chromatography. Structures were elucidated byemploying modern spectrometric analysis techniques such as EI/MS, ESI/MS, 1~H-NMR,(13)~C-NMR and APT. On the basis of analysis of GS/MS, structures of sevensterols, twenty-one methyl esters including eleven rare carboxylic esters with oddcarbon and three phthalates were identified. The bioactivity of fractions was tested by BSL ( Brine Shrimp Lethality)and antibacterial experiments. The fractions show better activity in inhibitingCandida albicans.
