Experimental studies of the generation and expansion processes of a pulsed plasma generator are conducted, and the jet expansion process is simulated numerically. The discharge and jet expansion characteristics of the pulsed plasma generator are investigated, which is beneficial to study the dynamic characteristics of transient pulsed plasma. The impedance and energy conversion principles are studied through the capillary discharge experiments, and the experimental results agree well with the theoretic analyses. The capillary interior pressure and the outside axial pressure of the capillary are measured in the experiments. The results are of significant importance to the experimental studies and numerical simulations. In the latter experiments thrust generated under the free jet conditions of the plasma generator is also measured.High-speed camera is used to record the expansion process of the plasma jet. Some special phenomena appeared in the jet process are analyzed. A two-dimension axisymmetric model of the unsteady plasma jet process is developed and solved by the commercial software FLUENT. The distributions of such characteristics as temperature, velocity, pressure and density are investigated.
