To meet need of high-load, large volume rate, low noise centrifugal pump, more and more pump producing corporation are going to use high tech in the development of high performance pump. In recent years, with the development of CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) it has become an important research direction to use CFD to study the mechanism of the flow in the pump and then optimize the design with the simulation result. With this method not only can it save the experiment equipment and reduce the development time, but also can demonstrate the flow details in the flow field which can not obtain in the experiment. The flow field in a kind of centrifugal pump is studied with commercial software package FLUNT in this paper. The main work is as follows:The paper summarizes the conventional design method of centrifugal pump and modern design method based on CAD/CFD method and the history of the computation method of the flow in centrifugal pump.A detailed analysis of the simulation results at design load and several off-design conditions is presented. At design load simulation reveals a well-behaved flow field without significant separation. At off-design load the flow field is significant different, hence the pump efficiency is low. Many important phenomena of the flow are observed from the simulation results, such as large eddy flow. The overall performance curves of the pump obtained by numerical simulation are compared with the experimental data. They have good coincidence.The simulation results provide important theoretical basis for investigating the factors, which affect the efficiency of centrifugal pump. This can help to improve the design of impellers and diffusers to achieve a high efficiency and wide operating range.
