Owing to the important effect of change of world ocean circulation on the long-time variation of global climate and on the variation of regional meteorology, as well as owing to the determination of open boundary in regional oceanography through world ocean circulation, the study of world ocean circulation is concerned by oceanographers greatly. The rapid development of the global oceanic general circulation model (OGCM) is attained. In the study of OGCM, it is deemed by oceanographer community, the parameterization of vertical mixing plays a key role.In this paper, the scheme of parameterization of ocean finestructure mixing proposed by Fan (2002) is firstly appled to OGCM, which is a twenty-layer OGCM developed by LASG (ML20). In order to study the effect of the scheme of parameterization of ocean finestructure mixing on OGCM, our model is spun up from a motorial state, which has been attained by means of integration for 300 years using ML20. Initial conditions for temperature and salinity are taken from the three-dimensional distributions of Levitus' annual mean observation with seasonally varying climatological forcing at the surface.A preliminary analysis of the 700-year integration of our numerical experiment shows that:(1) The simulated thickness of permanent thermocline is obviously thinner than that ofML20;(2) A better simulation of the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) is obtained;(3) A encouraging improvement of simulation of the deep water and the bottom water is obtained;(4) The simulation in equatorial region is not good. Due to the simulated small gradient of temperature in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, the simulatedequatorial current is weak;(5) No significant improvement has been obtained for the effect of Mediterraneanwater on OGCM.
