The shear strength of rock joints is the essential elements affecting the stability of the engineering rock mass, and the possibility of the engineering rock mass damage is determined by the shear strength of joints, the traditional method to get the shear strength of rock joints mostly is laboratory direct shear test and in suit direct shear test. Its main advantage is "direct" form test, however the high cost together with complicate manipulation and long period of direct shear test has been found, and if the representation of selected samples is not very good, the results will not represent the actual shear strength of rock joint. The estimate-method is advantaged in considering the geology and engineering condition, low cost, short period and simple manipulation, in addition because the estimate-method adapt to statistical estimate, the problem of difficult representing geology can be resolved. It is necessary to carry out the comparison study between the estimate-method results and direct shear test results in order to improve the reliability applying the estimate-method to engineering practice. In this paper, the nature rock joint samples have been selected differently in lithology and dimensionbased on the extensive investigation. The parameters of shear strength have been acquired based on a series of direct wet and dry shear tests using multistage direct shear test. At the same time, the parameters of shear strength have been estimated using JRC-JCS model, the comparison study in this paper proves that the results of estimate-method and directshear test match very well and the estimate-method have a wideforeground in application.
