The frontogenesis and frontolysis in the Yellow Sea in winter are investigated with a three-dimensional baroclinic primitive equation model-Hamburg Shelf Ocean Model (HAMSOM).The results agree well with the statistic results that are multi-annual monthly mean. There are mainly four temperature fronts in the Yellow Sea in winter : the Cheju Strait;Qingdao-Rongcheng-Yantai;Dalian-Dandong-Daqing archipelago;the area from JiangSu Seacoast to Cheju. The temperature fronts in Dalian-Dandong-Daqing archipelago start in September. The strength of temperature fronts reaches its maximum in December and decreases in March. There the strongest temperature fronts in Qingdao-Rongcheng from January to February while from December to March in Yantai-Rongcheng .The temperature fronts in Jiangsu Seacoastal and southeast of Cheju join together in December and reach its strongest in January .The strength of the temperature fronts decreases from March. The characteristics and mechanism of frontogenesis and frontolysis in the Yellow Sea in winter are studied .The temperature fronts often appear in the area where the topography has great gradient. Tsushima current and Taiwan current ,Yellow Sea coast current will impact on the position and strength of the temperature fronts.Engraulis japonicus denseness in place near the temperature fronts which is encircled by the strongest fronts. The approach adopted in the thesis is proven to be successful, and be generally applied to study the frontogenesis and frontolysis in other shallow seas and shelf oceans.
