The oasis, which constitutes the arid area, sustains the life and development of the arid area's people, and forms a contradictory with the desert. The two eco-systems can invert each other in some conditions. The ecotone between oasis and desert is the most prominent area to these inverts activities. It records the most sensitive and intact information on the translation belt. It's significant to further the study of the environment evolvement and forming mechanism, and this helps to open out its ecological essential, protect and develop the oasis, lacated in the cross belt which converge northeaster and northwester, Yutian Oasis was threatened by the ilowing sand, and has the bad nature conditionsThe main purpose of the paper is applying fractal theory to research on the change of transitional belt between oasis and desert, which is a typical ecosystem in arid zone. Obtaining full and accurate information on the spot, basing on the fractal theory, fully using remote sensing image as the main research data and relative thematic map as reference data, aiding of PCI which is a powerful image processing software of remote sensing technique, the land desertification and the change of transitional belt between oasis and desert in Yutian county are analyzed quantificationally. The rational proposals are tabled for the desert controlling and area rebuilding in the future, furthermore, this paper deeply discusses and validates the effect of fractal approach applied in the desertification research.By this method, the new subject of fractal theory can be more used in environment protect and desertification harness. The model of fractal approach built on the research should be took effect on the local development and be auxiliary in local government's decision. To simplify the program of research and dynamically supervise the change oftransitional belt by using quantificational index.
