Ants are a sort of insects which have the great edibleness and officinal value. Their uses have been a long history in China. It is reported that the ants have protein, amino acids, many vitamines and plenty of microelements in their bodies. By now the studies on components of ants are almost about Polyrhachis vicina Roger, Formica sanguinea Latr.and Formica rufa Linnaeus. To prove up ulteriorly the components of ants, the author has separated and purified the polypeptides of Formica rufa Linnaeus and studied their biologic and officinal activities. At the same time, the author has mensurated the molecular weight of polypeptides by SDS polyacrylamide electrophoresis to analyze the polypeptides quantific-ationally. In order to provide the scientific basis for studying and empoldering the ants, we have done these studies. This article is consisted of five parts:1. The separation of the Formica rufa Linnaeus samples by pel filtration chromatography. In this part, the author has primarily separated the Formica rufa Linnaeus samples by glucosan gel G-50 filtration chromatography. The principle is the difference of the molecular weight of different components. The ultraviolet absorption detector is also applied to detect the protein apexes. The components are respectively collected by fraction collection. We have gotten two absolute components.2. The separation and preparation of the Formica rufa Linnaeus samples by reversed-phase high-performance liquidchromatography. In this part, the author has sequentially seperated the above mentioned components by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. As the result, each component is separated and prepared to get three components by this experimentation. We have gotten six components in all. The ultraviolet absorption has detected the components and proved that they are all polypeptides.3. The mensuration of the biologic activity of the Formica rufa Linnaeus polypeptides. In the part, we used the experiments in vitro studies, the lymphocyte transformation, to mensurate the biologic activities of the polypeptides whose contents are higher than others'. The conclusion is the polypeptides have the immunological activity.4. The mensuration of the molecular weight of Formica rufa Linnaeus polypeptides. In the part, the author's intention is mensurating the molecular weight of the polypeptides by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electro-phoresis. The result shows that one of the polypeptides which we have mensurated is about 17,000Da.The conclusion is that the components which we have separated and purified are small molecule polypeptides.5. The pharmaceutical study of Formica rufa Linnaeus polypeptides. In this part, we used the experiments on the animal models to study the pharmaceutical activities of Formica rufa Linnaeus polypeptides. The conclusion is Formica rufa Linnaeus polypeptides which have the antiphlogistic and antalgic effect. In conclusion,we have proved the exist of Formica rufa Linnaeus polypeptides. They have immunological activity, the antiphlogistic and antalgic effect. Consequently we can provide the scientific reference for researching, emplodering and using the pharmaceutical value of the ants.
