This work is a basic research on culturing and biological characters of several common medical Chinese bryophytes with important medical values and attractive futures according to the literatures at home and abroad.Firstly collected medical bryophytes must be reserved carefully, then mainly focused on their morphological structures, culturing and antibacterial activities to recognize and understand their biological characters. Observe and compare photosynthetic apparatus structural differences of gametophyte and sporophyte on two species in Polytrichaceae by light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) . In order to reserve and enlarge these medical bryophytes, to provide enough plants material for later experiment study and practical use, soil culturing, liquid culturing and tissue culturing methods were introduced. With different solvent to prepare extracts of each species for antibacterial examination experiments, we can make out some bryophytes with antibacterial activity, then compare their antibacterial ability, providing reference literature for the development of antibiotics drugs. The results of this work are reported as follows:1.LM and TEM observation showed that there were not stomata on their leaves and capsules. Both gametophytes and sporophytes possessed shade type chloroplasts, but leaves, especially lamellae, had much more chloroplast thylakoid than capsules.2.Culturing studies showed that several medical bryophytes were successfully reserved and enlarged, and enough pure axenic plant materials were got for later experiment study and practical use ; Also two mosses (Atrichum undulatum and Atrichum undulatum var. minus) successfully induced callus.3.Antibacterial activities experiments indicated bryophytes indeed contains antibacterial activities substances, but largely submitted to organic material; Occurrence of antibacterial substances seems to be more frequent in liverworts than in mosses.
