Submarine pipelines are playing a more and more important role in the exploitation of the ocean oil. Along with the higher requirement of the working conditions, submarine pipelines have more probability of invalid occurrence in buckling. The buckling of pipelines is attracting scholars at home and abroad to make researches.Firstly, the theories of lateral buckling and upheaval buckling are elaborated in this paper. At the same time, this paper emphasizes the mechanism and the influencing factors of buckling of buried pipelines. The analytic formulas are used in the real project, from which we can gain the basic buckling principles. Secondly, the general finite elements analysis (FEA) software ABAQUS is applied to build the three-dimensional and elastic-plastic models of the pipelines with pipelines-soil interaction, to make numerical simulation with different initial imperfections of the buried pipelines, and gain the buckling principles affected by different initial imperfections. We can see the FEA results of pre-buckling and post-buckling obviously, and gain the stress concentration in different parts of pipelines. By comparison, there are some deviations between the FEA results and the theoretical results, and the principle is the same as Taylor and Tran's generally, so the research in this paper can be used as guidance in the real projects.
