The continuous improvement of technology of cancelling noise makes a challenge to the traditional sonar. It is necessary to study new methods to detect ships.Wakes are formed in the process of ship sailing. Methods based on wakes detection can be used to detect the location of wakes indirectly. In this paper, the optical scattering properties of the ship wakes and sea water are analyzed, several commonly used filtering method of scattering water are discussed, and the scattering mechanism of the wake is analyzed. The results show that the scattering mechanisms of turbulence and bubbles are different, and the effect is not the same. Based on the analysis of optical characteristics of the ship wakes, a method based on laser pulses area to detect wakes is proposed.Experimental study of the bubble and the turbulence on the impact of backward scattering is completed, and results show the wake will cause the area of scattering signal of pulsed light to change, the number of bubbles has relatively large impact on the area, so that the method is feasible, and this detection method could differentiate between the bubble wake and turbulence.
