Research On The Influence Of Top Management Team Faultlines On Ambidextrous Innovation

Abstract/Summary:
Since the 18 th CPC National Congress clearly put forward the strategy of innovation-driven development,and the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19 th CPC Central Committee continued to emphasize the promotion of scientific and technological self-reliance,the importance of innovation to the transformation and upgrading of China’s economy can be seen.In this context,as an important micro subject to promote economic development,how to improve the innovation ability of enterprises,especially to improve the high-quality innovation that can create long-term competitive advantages,has been widely concerned by the practical and theoretical circles.The top management team is the strategic leadership core of the enterprise,which directly determines the development direction of the enterprise to a large extent.The reasonable construction of the top management team is beneficial to the operation and sustainability of the enterprise,so it plays an important role in the process of enterprise development.From the perspective of top management team structure,the top management team faultlines is based on the further discussion of team heterogeneity and diversity,focusing on the multiple dimensions of managers’ characteristics and the dynamic synergy between different characteristics,and directly reflects the composition of the entire executive team.Previous studies have found that the top management team faultlines will affect the development of enterprise innovation,but the conclusions are still different.In addition,the relevant literature mainly regards enterprise innovation as a homogeneous activity,and does not verify in detail how top management team faultlines affects different types of enterprise innovation.Meanwhile,there is a relative lack of discussion on the internal path and boundary of the impact of the top management team faultlines on enterprise innovation.In view of the current research situation,the paper selects Chinese A-share listed high-tech enterprises from 2012 to 2019 as the research sample.Under the guidance of organizational ambidexterity theory,social identity theory and information decision-making theory,this paper divides the top management team faultlines into social category faultlines and information-based faultlines,and systematically analyzes their impact on enterprise ambidextrous innovation.At the same time,combined with resource-based theory,this paper discusses the indirect role of heterogeneous redundant resources in the relationship between them,and further discusses the regulatory effect of internationalization and competitive intensity on the relationship between top management team faultlines and ambidextrous innovation in order to analyze the mechanism and boundary of the effect of the top management team faultlines.Through OLS regression analysis,robustness test and considering endogenous problems,the conclusions are as follows:(1)The social category faultlines has a significant inhibitory effect on exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation,and the information-based faultlines has a promoting effect on exploratory innovation,but it does not significantly affect the exploitative innovation.Expansionary analysis shows that the above results are more significant in state-owned enterprises,and from the overall point of view of ambidextrous innovation,the social category faultlines does not have a significant impact on the ambidextrous innovation balance,but inhibits the coordinated development of ambidextrous innovation.On the other hand,the information-based faultlines has a positive impact on the balance and synergy of ambidextrous innovation.(2)The social category faultlines has a positive effect on enterprise unabsorbed slack and absorbed slack,while the information-based faultlines has a negative effect on unabsorbed slack and absorbed slack.(3)Slack resources show a masking effect between the top management team faultlines and ambidextrous innovation,which to a certain extent provides an explanation that the information-based faultline does not significantly affect the exploitative innovation.After distinguishing the types of slack resources,it is found that unabsorbed slack plays a masking role in the relationship between top management team faultlines and ambidextrous innovation,while absorbed slack plays a mediating effect in the relationship between the two.(4)The effect of top management team faultlines on ambidextrous innovation is affected by the process of enterprise internationalization.When the degree of internationalization is low and the speed of internationalization is fast,the negative influence of social category faultlines on exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation is more significant.At the same time,when the degree of internationalization is low and the speed of internationalization is low,the information-based faultlines plays a more significant role in promoting exploratory innovation,but the unrelated relationship between information-based faultlines and exploitative innovation is not affected by the process of internationalization.(5)The competitive intensity faced by enterprises plays a regulatory role in the relationship between top management team faultlines and ambidextrous innovation.Compared with the lower competitive intensity,when the competitive intensity is high,the inhibitory effect of social category faultlines on ambidextrous innovation is more significant,and the information-based faultlines plays a more significant role in promoting ambidextrous innovation.(6)When the financing constraints of enterprises are different,the impact of top management team faultlines on ambidextrous innovation is different,such as: when the financing constraint is high,the negative correlation between social category faultlines and ambidextrous innovation is more significant,and the positive correlation between information-based faultlines and exploratory innovation is more significant,but it has not shown a significant correlation with exploitative innovation.This study discusses the relationship between the composition structure of top management team and enterprise ambidextrous innovation from the perspective of team faultlines.On the one hand,the research conclusions provide relevant suggestions for enterprises to build and optimize the top management team to promote the development of high-quality innovation.On the other hand,it reveals the importance of slack resources in the process of enterprise development,and provides empirical evidence for enterprises to regulate and control the stock of slack resources reasonably.At the same time,the conclusion confirms the important influence of situational factors such as internationalization strategy and competitive intensity on enterprise operation.The innovative points of the research can be summarized as follows:(1)The existing literature mainly pays attention to the influence of top management team faultlines from the perspective of innovation homogeneity.On the basis of organizational ambidextrous theory,this study verifies how social category faultlines and information-based faultlines affect exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation respectively.It not only enriches the research on the economic consequences caused by top management team faultlines,but also expands the discussion of the antecedent variables of ambidextrous innovation.(2)There is a relative lack of discussion on the influencing factors of slack resources in the existing research,this paper provides a new idea for analyzing the factors affecting slack resources in enterprises based on the perspective of top management team faultlines.(3)This paper constructs the logical framework of "top management team faultlines-slack resources-ambidextrous innovation".Through the analysis of the indirect effect of heterogeneous slack resources,it is helpful to reveal the differential path of the effect of top management team faultlines on enterprise innovation,which makes up for the lack of discussion on its influence mechanism in the existing research.(4)The top management team faultlines may have different effects in different scenarios,and some studies have paid attention to the “activation” effect of organizational atmosphere,manager characteristics and other factors on the team faultlines.However,the discussion based on the perspective of enterprise internationalization strategy and competition intensity remains to be in-depth.This study takes it as a starting point,which provides a new perspective for analyzing the function boundary of the top management team faultlines.
