| In the contemporary world, the tension between humans and nature is increasingly prominent, with environmental degradation emerging as a significant global issue.Seyyed Hossein Nasr(1933-)is an Islamic scholar who is deeply concerned about the emergence of an ecological crisis.Nasr’s extensive writings cover various subjects, including Islamic philosophy,Islamic art,Islamic science,Sufism, and the ecological crisis. His argument is that the ecological problem is fundamentally rooted in the dominance of scientism, which asserts that contemporary science is the only reliable means of obtaining genuine knowledge, and the resulting disregard for the religious perspective.Nasr proposes that restoring the religious perspective is essential for achieving a long-lasting solution to the ecological problem. This perspective views the universe as a manifestation of God,in contrast to the scientific worldview that considers the universe to be composed of independent material entities.Nasr embraces an inclusive philosophy that draws inspiration from the perennial philosophy and the fundamental principles of Islam.Nasr proposed that the key to resolving the ecological problem lies in replacing the dominant scientific worldview with a religious one.Nasr argues that in order to effectively address the ecological crisis,a civilization must draw upon its conventional intellectual resources.Nasr highlights the shortcomings of mainstream environmentalism, which has been compromised by business interests, and social and political movements. The environmental policies have been more focused on pursuing better management of natural resources while neglecting to question the essential objective of continuous economic development. The policies rely on technological solutions and more growth to lift people out of poverty, without considering that such activities often contribute to nature’s scarcity.Seeking technical efficiency as a strategy for reducing damage to the ecosystem has some positive impacts, but it has long-term drawbacks that sustain the economic goal of continual development of production and consumption in a finite world. One of Nasr’s key ideas is that the current ecological crisis is not just a result of technological and economic factors, but is also a result of a spiritual crisis. He argues that modern Western societies have lost touch with their spiritual roots and have become too focused on materialism and consumerism. This has led to an exploitative and destructive relationship with nature. In order to address the ecological crisis,Nasr says that we need to reconnect with our spiritual heritage and rediscover our sense of reverence for the natural world. He believes that the traditional Islamic teachings on the interdependence of all beings, the importance of balance and harmony, and the idea of stewardship, can provide valuable insights for the contemporary environmental movement.Nasr also critiques the Western concept of "nature" as something that exists solely for human use and exploitation. However, his works do not present a clear and comprehensive strategy for resolving this issue. There has not been any comprehensive and systematic discussion of Nasr’s method which would analyze his views within the intellectual fields that have influenced his philosophy. That can be seen in his essays and interviews that explore how the Muslim community can address the ecological crisis within the framework of its existing intellectual landscape. To fully grasp his perspective, one must have a good understanding of the various dimensions of the Islamic philosophical tradition which he references.Additionally, there is a need for further examination of how Nasr’s ideas interact with other environmental philosophies and worldviews,as well as their relevance and applicability to non-Islamic cultures and societies. Thus,a systematic analysis of Nasr’s ecological ethics includes the following:(1)The exploration of his perspectives on the origins of the ecological problem and the required reaction for every religious group,(2)The examination of the conventional Islamic perspective and the influence of contemporary technology on Muslim ideology since the 19th century, which Nasr examines while proposing his Islamic reaction,(3)The assessment of Nasr’s approach to the Islamic world within the framework of the Islamic tradition thought that best corresponds to his viewpoints,(4)The evaluation of comparable perspectives in both the Islamic and the Western world,in addition to a rebuttal to objections to Nasr’s approach,and(5)An explanation of Nasr’s position on modern technology’s solutions to ecological problems. The main goals of this thesis are to(1)understand Nasr’s views on the ecological problem,(2)critically examine the philosophical and religious underpinnings of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s ecological ethics,(3)analyze how Nasr’s adherence to traditional Islamic thought is reflected in his vision,(4)discuss Nasr’s recommendations to build relationship among the nature, humanity, and the divinity. The thesis will highlight the fact that Nasr’s argument is not merely founded on physical survival or ethical teachings but on his comprehension of the spiritual truth of nature and its significance in determining humanity’s purpose as prescribed by religion.According to Nasr,a sound comprehension of knowledge is imperative because he holds contemporary science primarily accountable for the ecological problem, which challenges religion with the knowledge it claims to possess. The objective of this dissertation is to bridge the gaps in the portrayal of Nasr’s religious viewpoints concerning environmentalism. This dissertation has been directed by two questions:(1)what are the key principles and concepts in Nasr’s ecological ethics, and how do they relate to traditional Islamic thought?(2)What is the role of spirituality and metaphysics in Nasr’s ecological ethics, and how does this perspective shape his understanding of ecological ethics and values?A Hermeneutical methodology has been applied for this study as the source material involves textual analysis. The focus of my analysis is to interpret the authors’ writings. The aim of the hermeneutical method is to delve into the multiple levels of meaning in the study materials, including both scientific and narrative interpretations. The goal of this study is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the texts, taking into account the historical and cultural context. This study focused on extensively reading of primary material, which includes Nasr’s books, articles, speeches, and recorded lectures.Secondary sources such as books and journal articles by different scholars will also be used to comprehend Nasr’s cultural and traditional background in Islam, which will aid in answering my research questions. This thesis is divided into five chapters and focused on Nasr‘s main ideas and concepts of ecological philosophy.Chapter 1 introduced the esteemed Islamic scholar and environmental philosopher,Seyyed Hossein Nasr, his life, works and basic thoughts.Nasr’s extensive contributions to Islamic philosophy,Islamic science,Sufism,Islamic art,and the school of perennial philosophy earned him widespread recognition as one of the most influential Islamic philosophers of contemporary times. His remarkable career as an academic and administrator spanned over five decades, with notable accomplishments in Iran,Lebanon, and the United States. The chapter focused on Nasr’s perspective on the ecological crisis, which centered around the restoration of the religious outlook and the rejection of scientism.According to Nasr, the environmental problem resulted from a secular and materialistic mindset that ignored the spiritual dimensions of nature. His approach sought to bridge the gap between science and religion by advocating for a holistic and integrated approach to the environment. The chapter also delved into some of Nasr’s notable works, which encompassed a diverse range of subjects relating to Islam, modernity, and spirituality. His writings were characterized by a deep reverence for traditional wisdom,a critique of the excesses of modernity, and a commitment to promoting the spiritual dimension of human life.Overall, the chapter aimed to present a comprehensive overview of Nasr’s contributions to Islamic thought and environmental philosophy. In this chapter, the research findings demonstrate that Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s works offer a unique perspective on the relationship between religion, science, and the environment.Nasr’s Islamic faith and profound knowledge of Western philosophy and science have earned him a distinguished reputation as one of the foremost intellects of our time.Through his writings,Nasr aims to reach both academic and general audiences, sharing his profound insights into the interconnectedness of all things. One of the fundamental concepts in Nasr’s philosophy is his call for a shift in the scientific worldview, which he argues has contributed to the ecological crisis.Nasr contends that the dominance of technology-driven modern lifestyles has resulted in a disconnect from our natural environment and a lack of appreciation for the sacredness of creation. As an alternative,he proposes the restoration of religiously oriented lifestyles that can foster a deeper connection to the natural world.Through his vast body of work,Nasr provides valuable insights into the nature of the universe, humanity’s place in it,and the role of religion and spirituality in the modern world. His writings offer a distinctive perspective on the intersection of science, religion, and the environment, and highlight the importance of a holistic approach to the ecological crisis.Overall,Nasr’s contributions to the field offer a compelling vision for a more sustainable and spiritually grounded future.Chapter 2 focuses on Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s views about the roots of the ecological crisis and his critique of the scientific worldview that dominates modern society, arguing that it is responsible for the current environmental crisis.Nasr’s thesis is supported by the findings of climate scientists who warn of the dire consequences of continued environmental degradation. To address the issue,Nasr suggests the development of more sustainable and responsible alternatives. The chapter is divided into five sections that evaluate the severity of the environmental problem, critique modernity and its contribution to the crisis, propose a change in perspective as a method for resolution, present the traditional worldview as an alternative, and suggest ways to bring about a transition or paradigm change.Nasr’s work is rooted in the teachings of the Qur’an,which emphasize the importance of contemplating the creations of the heavens, and traditional scholars who underscore the need to recognize the greater realities beyond the physical world.Overall,Nasr’s critique of modern science highlights the importance of recognizing the impact of our actions on the environment and developing alternative approaches that are more sustainable and responsible. In Chapter 2,the research findings reveal Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s insights into the ecological crisis and its root causes.Nasr argues that the current scientific worldview is responsible for environmental degradation as it promotes a disconnected view of nature that denies any indication of God’s role or existence. This shift away from traditional perceptions of nature has resulted in the emergence of scientism and scientific progressivism, which further exacerbate the ecological crisis. To address this crisis,Nasr proposes a revitalization of religious worldviews, specifically connecting with Islamic traditions and its rich collection of traditional intelligence on the environment.By doing so,Nasr believes that Muslims can be motivated to adopt more environmentally friendly behaviors and lifestyles. However, the research findings indicate that unless the issues with scientism are acknowledged,Muslims may be influenced to adopt a more materialistic lifestyle, which will further contribute to the environmental crisis.Nasr’s work emphasizes the limitations of modern science and the need to incorporate foundational principles of the unity and hierarchy of reality and the ultimate meaningfulness of the cosmos to develop a long-term solution to the ecological crisis.By recognizing the interconnectedness of all things and the importance of a holistic approach,Nasr proposes a more sustainable and spiritually grounded future for humanity.Overall,Chapter 2 of the research study highlights the critical importance of incorporating traditional intelligence and religious worldviews in developing effective solutions to the ecological crisis.Chapter 3 will explore the religious background of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s perspective. As an Islamic scholar,he proposes a framework for sustainable environmental ethics rooted in Islamic metaphysics. This chapter will examine Nasr’s conception of Islamic metaphysics and Sharia and their relevance to ecological ethics. This chapter will analyze the three core concepts of the perennial philosophy in Islamic metaphysics, and how they inform Islamic ecological ethics.Furthermore,we will discuss the challenges posed by contemporary scientific worldviews to Islamic ethics and how Nasr proposes to address them. The chapter also explores Nasr’s approach to promoting Islamic environmental ethics, highlighting the crucial role played by Islamic theological teachings and Sufism.Overall, the chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Nasr’s conventional Islamic response to the ecological crisis and its potential to contribute to the development of sustainable solutions to environmental problems. In this chapter, the findings suggest that Islamic Sharia, metaphysics, and ecological ethics play a pivotal role in understanding the universe as a theophany and the interconnectedness between humans and nature. This comprehension is grounded in the principles of Wahdat al-wujud and the perennial philosophy, which are fundamental to the Islamic worldview. The research stresses the significance of restoring the traditional Islamic perspective on nature and fostering adherence to Islamic environmental ethics through the guidance of Sufism.Additionally, the chapter highlights that the ecological crisis is not solely a scientific or technological dilemma but is rooted in the spiritual and ethical crisis of modern society. Therefore,to address the ecological crisis effectively,it is essential to uphold and implement Islamic environmental ethics. The chapter concludes that Islamic theology, metaphysics, and spirituality play a critical role in addressing the ecological crisis and promoting sustainable development.Chapter 4 explores the Islamic environmental thoughts of Seyyed Hossein Nasr. The chapter begins by examining Nasr’s Islamic beliefs and worldview, including the concept of Traditionalism or Perennial Philosophy, which has significantly influenced his thinking. The focus is on traditionalist Islam, particularly Islamic mysticism or Sufism, which Nasr regards as central to Islam. To better comprehend Nasr’s ideas, the chapter also discusses the concept of esotericism,as defined by Antoine Faivre,an authority in this area. Finally, the chapter examines how these concepts relate to Nasr’s environmental message and his call for the resurgence of Islamic environmental ethics.By the end of this chapter, readers will have a deeper understanding of Nasr’s Islamic environmental thoughts and their place within a more comprehensive philosophical and religious context. In Chapter 4 the research findings reveal that Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s ecological ethics is rooted in Islamic teachings drawn from the Qur’an,Hadith, and Sharia.Nasr’s approach stresses the fundamental concept of haqq, which emphasizes the right of every living being in accordance with its nature and emphasizes the teachings of the Prophet on the protection of nature and communal management of natural resources. The Sharia provides both specific regulations and overarching principles for addressing ecological crises, such as regulating usury, consumerism, and wealth accumulation.Nasr’s Islamic environmental teachings have the potential to bring about significant structural and systemic changes to the global economy and financial institutions that prioritize wealth growth.Ultimately, his perspective highlights the importance of a deep understanding of nature for creating effective environmental laws, and emphasizes how a profound reverence for nature is critical in environmental thinking.Chapter 5 discussed the meanings and influences of Nasr’s ecological ethics. The thesis suggests that Nasr’s ideas about the modern environmental crisis, highlight the significance of traditional metaphysical systems and recognizing the sacredness of nature.Nasr’s alternative approach to environmental problems challenges the exploitative perspective of modern society. The final chapter summarizes Nasr’s essential concepts and their potential benefits for the environmental movement, suggesting that by restoring the sacred dimension of nature, individuals and communities can take action to protect the earth and move towards a more sustainable future. The research findings presented in Chapter 5 indicate that Nasr believes that religion is vital in transforming perspectives and lifestyles among the general population, with religious ethics being the most widely accepted form.He asserts that the concept of the "fear of God" and belief in punishment in the afterlife is the only effective means of deterring consumerist behavior. In the Islamic world, traditional religious scholars are crucial in promoting this type of thinking.Nasr expresses criticism towards Western, nonreligious approaches to environmentalism, including those that combine spirituality with environmental goals, viewing them as "New Age pseudo-science."Finally,the thesis suggests that Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s contributions to ecological ethics offer valuable insights into the relationship between religion, science, and the environment.Nasr’s critique of the scientific worldview that dominates modern society highlights the need for a more holistic and integrated approach to environmental issues. His proposed framework for sustainable ecological ethics rooted in Islamic metaphysics provides a unique perspective on the intersection of religion and the environment.Nasr’s writings emphasize the importance of recognizing the interconnectedness of all things and the spiritual dimensions of nature.By promoting a deeper connection to the natural world through a revitalization of religiously oriented lifestyles,Nasr offers a compelling vision for a more sustainable and spiritually grounded future.Overall,Nasr’s contributions to the field demonstrate the value of incorporating traditional intelligence and religious worldviews in developing effective solutions to the ecological crisis. This dissertation offers a comprehensive and in-depth examination of Nasr’s ecological ethics, highlighting its unique contributions to the field and its potential for shaping our understanding of the relationship between humans, nature, and the divine. |
