Poetic Space-Research On Sam Szafran’s Paintings

Space is the most basic and core proposition in painting.Based on the reflection of painting space expression,this paper takes Sam Szafran’s painting research as the core,focusing on the artist’s visual way and painting method for in-depth investigation.Through the unique form of space construction presented by Sam Szafran’s works,we can understand how artists truly face the perceptive world and enter into the expression of real vision and existence space.Thus,creative expression methods can be found in space exploration,providing a poetic possibility for current painting.The paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is an overall investigation of the development process of Sam Szafran’s artistic creation,understanding the different concerns of several important stages of the artist’s creation and its historical background,highlighting the turning point of its stages,which covers the road of Sam Szafran’s return from the initial abstract expression to the concrete through the expression of pure vision,and finally to the spatial composition.The second chapter is an investigation of Sam Szafran’s unique visual mode,which is a breakthrough to the traditional perspective law.This paper focuses on summarizing his visual characteristics from the perspectives of flowing vision,multi-dimensional perspective,fish-eye viewing,imaginative viewing and so on.The third chapter focuses on Sam Szafran’s method of forming picture space,which is an in-depth investigation of the artist’s specific painting methods,including the application techniques of materials,constitutive depiction,and the treatment of spatial relations.The fourth chapter puts forward the characteristics of the spatial expression of Sam Szafran’s paintings,which are mainly reflected in the flow and generation of space,the extension of feeling and memory,the dwelling of life,and the free expression of the whole space.Through the study of Sam Szafran’s painting method and expression,it touches on the proposition of artists’ poetic expression of painting space.Therefore,in the fifth chapter,combined with the investigation of artistic conception and poetry in traditional Chinese artistic thoughts,it extends the consideration of the correlation between the existence of space in painting and the artistic conception of poetry.
