J.Hillis Miller is a famous contemporary American literary critic and literary theorist.Throughout the practice of Miller’s literary criticism,he has always maintained his attention to “literary community” and “literary ethics”,and finally completed the construction of his literary community ethics in the late period. In HIS theory of literary community,“literary ethics” is the core of his theoretical observation, and through the theory of literary discourse and action, literature is finally regarded as a kind of conduct,so as to realize the link between the virtual reality of literature and the real society, forming the literary community ethics thought with Miller’s characteristics. In the period of conscious criticism,Miller has already bud the idea of literary community,in the period of deconstructive criticism, this idea initially formed, and finally completed the construction of the idea of literary community by the literary speech act theory, and took literary ethics as the core of this idea.Miller makes use of his literary community ethics to criticize literary works and further demonstrates the necessity of literary community ethics. In Miller’s thought of literary community ethics, community can be divided into three categories: “viable community”,“unavowable community” and “plural community”,each of which has its own special ethical regulations.Among them, the former two kinds of community can be regarded as a kind of parallel relationship, and “plural community”,it is a collection of both the society as a community of many that cross each other, mutual relationship between the community, there is no community of a community cut off completely on the other,in this sense, miller attempts to set up the plural form of community, unifies the first two,but the two communities can remain separate without being cut off from each other.Miller’s literary community ethics thought, the author with god and text, reader and text, author, reader and the author’s literary activities such as the relationship between the various factors, finally the individual factors of polymerization of literary production and consumption in the “literary community”,to study their ethical orientation in literary activities and the ethical order of the operation of the mechanism.Miller’s idea of literary community ethics first examines the author, then examines the literary text, and finally settles on the reading ethics, and mainly produces literary meaning based on the two ways of carrying on and progressing each other: differential repetition and intertext. There are three main types of difference repetition. The first type is the repetition of small parts of speech in the novel. The second type is the repetition of events or scenes in the text; The third category is repetition of different texts. The way to realize the link between text and text is the generation of intertext.Through a mutual relationship between texts in different periods,a new literary meaning is produced in the “middle” of the two.Under this ethical mechanism, modern literary text and traditional text can be linked, literary meaning can be produced, and literary efficacy can be guaranteed. In Miller’s thought of literary community ethics, the author is omnipotent, but limited under certain conditions. While literary text, although created by the author, has a certain degree of self-empowerment;Through different reading methods, readers can choose to follow the author and the text completely or create a text of their own in the process of reading. On the surface, the positioning of literary elements in Miller’s thought is full of paradoxes and opposites, but in fact, through the aggregation of these elements,Miller finally realized a process from aggregation to fitting and then to the mutual host of fusion,so as to achieve a transcendence of paradox.Miller’s thought of literary community ethics, based on language theory and ethical reflection as its core appeal, places all literary elements in literary activities in a dynamic system framework, and places the internal elements of literature in an ethical orientation. In this ideological framework,Miller clarified the responsibility and power of the author, the text and the reader, and linked literature as a virtual reality with objective reality,so as to explore the function of literature to participate in social construction.Fictional literature can predict the development of real society, witness the occurrence of disasters and give early warning of the future society. Therefore,IN this sense,Miller’s literary community ethics has its own unique position in the coordinate system of western literary theory, and has a clear humanistic position.Miller’s literary community ethics has obvious theoretical value.Miller studies ethical issues in the framework of literary community, which enriches the western theory of literary ethical criticism. It divides literary ethics into internal ethics and external ethics, and connects internal ethics and external ethics of literature through literary reading ethics. At the same time, the author makes a kind of ethical reflection on the western community consciousness by using this idea, which not only makes a calm reflection on the utopian community consciousness, but also criticizes the western extreme individualism community consciousness. This thought of Miller gives consideration to the aesthetic function and enlightenment function of literary ethics, and realizes the coordination between them.
