Abstract/Summary:
Cultural identity is an important psychological resource of an ethnic group, which tests the foundation for the existence and inheritance of cultures of different ethnic groups and countries."Ethnic culture is a unique symbol that distinguishes an ethnic group from other ethnic groups" and "cultural identity is the deepest level of identity, the root of ethnic unity and the soul of ethnic harmony"(Xi,2014,2021).The influence of cultural identity on intergroup contact has been debated. Some studies have found that cultural identity has a positive impact on intergroup contact, which is conducive to ethnic diversity and promotes positive interethnic relations.Other studies have shown that cultural identity can hinder inter-clan relationships. Most of the existing studies were based on western culture, and lack of systematic studies on ethnic cultural identity and interethnic contact attitudes and behavioral intentions under the cultural background of our country. The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of ethnic cultural identity on the attitude and behavior of interethnic contact. The current study investigated the influence factors and their valence of ethnic cultural identity on interethnic contact based on the perspective of social identity. To explore possible differences in influencing factors among different groups, this research examined construals of multiculturalism to be abstract or concrete have differential effects on interethnic contact attitudes and behavioral intentions. And tested the potential psychological effectiveness of ethnic cultural identity during the COVID-19 epidemic.Study 1 studied the status of ethnic cultural identity, bicultural identity integration(BII),interethnic contact attitude and behavior from different perspectives of majority and minority groups through questionnaire survey and interview, summarize and reveal the relationship between ethnic cultural identity and ethnic contact attitude.Study 2 examined the mediation role of basic personal values, personality traits and the in the relationship between ethnic cultural identity and ethnic contact attitude.Study 3 explored the relationship between ethnic cultural identity and intergroup conflict through qualitative research and investigation research, and proposed that protection values,as a typical form of cultural identity, was an important factor leading to inter-group conflict and a key approach to solve intergroup conflict.Study 4 proposes that different explanatory frameworks of ethnic cultures have different effects on ethnic contact attitudes and behavioral intentions, and explores the different effects of abstract and specific cultural explanatory frameworks of pluralism on ethnic contact attitudes and behaviors through experimental methods. In Study 5,we investigated the relationship between ethnic cultural identity and COVID-19 epidemic anxiety in the background of COVID-19 epidemic, and was explored the predictive effect of the integration of Chinese national culture and ethnic cultural identity as well as bicultural identity integration on COVID-19 epidemic anxiety,as well as the mediating role of basic personal values in the relationship between ethnic cultural identity and COVID-19 epidemic anxiety. This research includes 11 small studies through 5 studies.Through multi-dimensional and multi-method exploration, the research finds that:Based on the open interview and investigation research in the early stage, the self-compiled on ethnic contact behavior questionnaire has good reliability and validity, and can be used as a follow-up research tool. The result of factor analysis shows that ethnic contact behavior is composed of ethnic daily communication, ethnic cultural exploration, ethnic custom involvement, and ethnic contact consciousness. The survey found that there is a significant positive correlation between ethnic cultural identity and ethnic contact attitude, the higher the level of ethnic cultural identity, the more positive the attitude of ethnic contact.Ethnic cultural identity, personality traits and values are important predictors of contact attitudes among ethnic groups.Ethnic cultural identity as a source of security for members of an ethnic group, develops over time, and a person’s ethnic consciousness and feelings about himself are related to knowledge and understanding of other groups. When people explore and identify with their own ethnic culture, they will have a clearer understanding of their relationship with other groups and groups, and this understanding will lead them to have a more positive attitude towards other groups.Ethnic cultural identity is characterized by a commitment to the safety of the group, which can lead to a more positive view of other groups.Ethnic cultural identity is an important predictor of interethnic attitudes and behavioral intentions. In the majority group or minority group members, ethnic cultural identity is significantly related to the communication attitude and behavioral intention towards other ethnic groups. The results showed that ethnic cultural identity was positively associated with ethnic contact attitude in both majority and minority groups. However, the relationship of ethnic cultural identity and ethnic contact attitude was mediated by different mechanisms in majority compared to minority groups. In the majority ethnic group,self-transcendence and self-enhancement values, and agreeableness, partially mediated the relationship, where ethnic contact attitude was positively correlated with agreeableness and self-transcendence values and negatively correlated with self-enhancement values. In the minority ethnic group, conservation values and extraversion partially mediated the relationship, where ethnic contact attitude was positively correlated with extraversion and conservation values.Different mediating process suggest that future studies on motivational forces(values)of intergroup contact attitudes should consider factors of ecological and cultural diversity. Both the Han ethnic group and the minority in the minority areas have the characteristics of high level of cultural identity of their own ethnic group and the Chinese nationality, and the cultural identity of their own ethnic significantly positively correlated with the Chinese nationality.Bicultural Identity Integration(BII,incorporating BII-harmony and BII-blendedness),Chinese ethnic identity, local ethnic identity and ethnic communication attitudes and behavioral intentions were significantly positively correlated.Bicultural Identity Integration significantly predicted the contact attitude and behavioral intention of the out-group,the cultural identity of Chinese nationality significantly predicted the communication behavior intention of ethnic group, and the ethnic identity significantly predicted the communication attitude of ethnic group. The results support the recategorization of the dual identity model. The mediating effect of ethnic cultural identity on the relationship between the contact of Han ethnic group and minority and the attitude of ethnic communication is different. The direct effect of ethnic contact on the attitude of ethnic communication is significant. The direct role of ethnic minorities is not significant.Interethnic contact can promote positive communication attitude. However, for ethnic minority members, the direct influence of contact on intergroup communication attitude is not significant, but it has a positive effect through mediating factors. In Han and minority groups, the mediating factors and effects of contact promoting communication attitude are different. The Han group promotes communication attitude by increasing inter-ethnic positive communication behavior, reducing the level of ethnic constructivism, and reducing the social distance and cultural identity within the ethnic group. However, ethnic minorities promote ethnic communication attitude by increasing the level of ethnic positive communication behavior and ethnic constructivism, and the contact with the outside group has no significant predictive effect on ethnic minorities’ in-group cultural identity. There are differences in the mediating effect of inter-ethnic contact and positive communication behavior between Han ethnic group and minority. With the increasing frequency and depth of inter-ethnic contact and communication, ethnic minorities still maintain a higher inner group cultural identity. On the whole, the communication attitude towards other ethnic groups is usually positive, and the communication behavior of ethnic groups is affected by living environment, communication opportunities and other factors. The interethnic contact behavior is more frequent in ethnic mixed areas and community areas, while the inter-ethnic communication behavior is less frequent in ethnic Han community areas.Ethnic cultural identity predicted lower anxiety during the COVID-19 epidemic..The results showed that Chinese ethnic identity, native ethnic identity and open values predicted lower COVID-19 anxiety, while Self-enhancement values predicted higher COVID-19 related anxiety.Self-enhancement and open values have multiple mediating effects in the relationship between Chinese national identity, native ethnic identity and COVID-19 anxiety. These findings could provide collective identity perspective on psychological interventions to reduce anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis revealed that BII-harmony,BII-blendedness,and national identity were significantly negatively correlated with COVID-19-related anxiety.Mediation model analysis showed that power values were significantly positively correlated with COVID-19-related anxiety.Power values play a mediating role in the relationship between BII-harmony,ethnic identity, and COVID-19-related anxiety, and have an inhibitory effect on this relationship. Our findings indicate that BII-harmony and ethnic identity could have the function of protecting ethnic minority college students from COVID-19-related anxiety.Emphasizing individualistic personal power values could increase COVID-19-related anxiety, whereas a collectivist identity reduces anxiety. These findings could provide another perspective on psychological interventions to reduce anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic.Behavior experiment found that abstract and concrete socialist cultural explanation of diversity in unity of two different framework have significant effect on interethnic close contact attitudes.Participants primed with an abstract construal of multiculturalism showed significantly more positive intimate contact attitude toward Han ethnic than did those in the primed with a concrete construal of multiculturalism. There is no significant difference in casual contact attitude toward Han ethnic in abstract and concrete construal of multiculturalism. The results of this study clarify the relationship between the framework of cultural interpretation and ethnic contact. In the context of COVID-19 epidemic, abstract and concrete multiculturalism interpretation frameworks have significantly different effects on ethnic confidence in overcoming the epidemic. The confidence in the victory of COVID-19 was significantly higher in the group receiving the specific interpretation of the culture than in the abstract group.Qualitative research and investigation have found that protective values,as a typical form of cultural identity, are of great significance in exploring and resolving inter-clan conflicts.Inreconcilable interethnic conflicts are driven in part by groups that hold protective values and are loyal to group identity, often clinging to sacred, detached group values, and thus generating actions that have nothing to do with rational expectations of risk and reward.Protected values could affect the occurrence of interethnic conflicts and the strategies of conflict resolution and provide theoretical and practical guidance for promoting the harmonious development of interethnic relations. This study combines qualitative and quantitative research with experimental research to explore the relationship between ethnic cultural identity and ethnic communication attitude and behavior and its mediating factors from multiple perspectives and dimensions.Which provides a theoretical basis for promoting ethnic exchanges and integration.
