The research is based on Paul Kerry’s symbolic paintings which are created with their historic context and full of experimental spirit and self reflections. Many areas contribute to his work including western modern art history, sociology, psychology and anthropology, and his work,in return, produced a profound impact on contemporary art, philosophy and aesthetics.Paul Kerry believes that the essential mission of art is not to describe the visible and isolated things in the real world, but to create an invisible world and make the invisible visible. Therefore,on one hand,he uses the form itself to declare the meaning of things and seek the essence and purity of art,and therefore has a distinct tendency of metaphysical introspection; On the other hand,he rejects concrete expressions and embeds concrete elements into painting structures, trying to surpass realistic art in their spiritual connotations.western traditional reproductive paintings have been subverted in their creating concept and views of nature by Paul Kerry, who realizes the goal of art for its own purpose with symbol composition. From 1930 to 1940,symbols similar to hieroglyphics appeared in Paul Kerry’s paintings, especially in his later works, which had a strong metaphorical and mysterious color.Through the classification of these symbols, this paper analyzes their characteristics, significance and connotation of aspects of abstract form, psychological feelings and historical background. It can be seen that these symbolic languages,as Paul Kerry’s way of understanding the world and himself, show his spiritual track and thinking about "existence" in the form of diary with abstract form, strong metaphor and rich aesthetic connotations. In order to surpass the imitation of things,Paul Kerry started from the intrinsic aspects of experience phenomenon, transferred painting activities from the visible world to the invisible field, that is,from the external world to the spiritual world, completely abandoned the reproduction of external objects and images, and made art works regain an internal life.Paul Kerry refines, reorganizes and recreates people and things in the real world with visual elements such as colors, lines and symbols,so as to show by image the world he wants to express while deviating from the real world. His art combines metaphysical meanings with metaphysical images on the level of expanded relevance and deepened depth.Art works are related to the visible real world because their images are based on reality while It is related to the invisible world because it collects pieces from reality and psychology, internal impulse and external pressure, consciously rejecting of the secular world and the desire to return to the spiritual world. All symbols in Paul Kerry’s works of art are not only the language of self reference, but also a revelation to fate. They are not only an abstract illustration of the universe, but also an amplification of the microscopic and concrete world. There are no attributes of reality, history and space, but only the relationship between objects and images and the state attributes of entanglement, extension, encirclement and intersection. They are a kind of existence,a mental image of the artist in an unconventional state,It contains the small universe of human beings, and it is also the real-time state of the big universe. In such a mysterious and Utopian landscape world,Kerry saved human beings and art from the depression of secular sensibility and daily utilitarian logic to the level of poetic and mysterious survival, and guided human being’s limited life existence to the way to a transcendental world.
