Study On The Idioms Of Linjie Animal

Chinese idioms are linguistic signs with distinctive cultural attributes.In a set of idioms,structural forms of various genres are generally longer than that of words,so they contain more semantic content than common words,as well as more abundant information about the ethnic culture in semantic content.Linguistic research cannot exist in isolation from external factors,nor can the study of idioms.Among many influencing factors,culture and cognition play an important role in the generation or comprehension of idioms.Culture and cognition are complementary and inseparable,so only by combining culture and cognition in the discussion can we grasp idioms in an in-depth and comprehensive way.Culture is the product of human cognition,and we cognize the world and participate in creating results of material and spiritual culture in their models of thinking and with our ability to apply thinking;cognitive patterns are incubated in certain cultural circumstances,where existing cultural achievements and patterns show ethnic differences in cognitive patterns and consolidate our thinking and cognition,and ethnic culture and the ability of cognition promote each other in their development.Therefore,it is quite necessary to study idioms from the perspective of combining culture and cognition.In practical interactions with the objective world,Han people paid attention to various real animals in nature such as fish,shrimps,turtles,shellfish and frogs,which they synthesized to conceive “dragon”,a divine animal.Moreover,based on a perceptual understanding of these animals,they formed categorized cognition of “Lin Jie animals”,and endowed animals in this category with profound cultural and symbolic meanings.As important linguistic representations and media of relevant culture,idioms about Lin Jie animals are in a dynamic,open and relatively loose clustering system formed against a specific ethnic cultural background,and belong to the category of culture.From the perspective of combining cognition and culture,through qualitative and quantitative research,descriptive and explanatory discussion and a cultural survey,this paper focuses on giving a macroscopic overview and a microscopic interpretation of rich idiom about Lin Jie animals(including proverbs,set phrases,allegorical sayings and locutions),exploring their relationships with folklore,psychology and various aspects of culture,and applying theories of cognitive linguistics such as metaphor and prototype categories to investigate their metaphoric representations.This paper contains the following content:The chapter of introduction specifies the research object of idioms about Lin Jie animals,delimits the source of language data,expounds on the significance of topic selection,comments on discussions about relationships between language and thinking and culture,and reviews the history and status quo of contemporary idiom research and studies of idioms about animals from the perspectives of culture and cognition,and analyzes multi-dimensional surveys of Lin Jie animals in such fields as culturology.Chapter 1 analyzes genres and types of idioms about Lin Jie animals by periods when they came into being,to get an all-round understanding of such idioms.Idioms about Lin Jie animals are also found to be concrete,productive and rich in cultural connotations,which lays a foundation for success in studying them.Chapter 2 digs up folklore reflected in idioms about Lin Jie animals.Rich and diversified language data in the set of idioms about Lin Jie animals involves cultural content in the aspect of folk behavior,including many folk activities and phenomena such as folklore in fishing,business,diet,belief and entertainment reflected and represented by idioms about Lin Jie animals.Chapter 3 interprets spiritual ideas in idioms about Lin Jie animals.In existence as linguistic signs,idioms about Lin Jie animals provide a medium for the sufficient representation of specific spiritual and cultural connotations of Han.The semantic content of idioms about Lin Jie animals fully reflects the agricultural thought of sustainable fishing,the concept of reproduction worship and the Confucian values of the Han.Chapter 4 reveals metaphoric representations in idioms about Lin Jie animals.A large number of relevant entries have been generated and used under the cognitive mechanism of metaphor.With the concept of Lin Jie animals at the core,cognitive subjects construct a metaphoric system composed of metaphors for relations,action features,body organs and motion events.The part of conclusions gives a summary of core ideas in this paper,reflections on deficiencies of this study and a direction for in-depth research in the future.
